Art you can feel is one of a kind. For the casual person, the feeling comes few and far between. Once in a blue moon however, you come across art that puts it all into perspective. For me, it was the work of Kansas City artist, Darko. I first came across her work after making a cover for rapper Krissy Idk’s upcoming “No Land” mixtape. Knowing the rapper himself as well as his complex mind, Darko was somehow able to incapsulate every idea and vision he had for the cover. This unique ability was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. After gazing through her previous work as well, it was clear her art needed immediate exposure.
Darko tells us she’s been creating ever since she could hold a pencil and created the name to serve as alter ego/artist name. Although she draws much of her artistic inspiration from her surroundings, a majority of her inspiration stems from childhood memories like cartoons and animations. In terms of her creative process, she makes it clear she doesn’t really have one. She describes her “process” as a simple wave of inspiration where everything flows and makes sense, or as she calls it, her “creative high”. Darko has gone viral on Instagram and Twitter on several occasions with her psychedelic, cartoon-heavy, surrealistic art moving the needle for modern art. For the past year, she’s been widely-recognized online for her artistic interpretations of popular music covers like the couple pieces below:
Although art holds its beauty through it’s ability to be subjective, in my eyes, Darko’s is almost too fascinating to be deemed as anything other than a masterpiece. Within every creation, you’re able to hear, feel, and envision the detail behind every piece. Her art evokes such strong emotion that it’s virtually impossible to not get lost in the beauty of your own imagination. The combination of colors, characters, dimensions, effects and layers throughout her artwork unlocks the creative genius of Darko’s world.
