Today In Hip Hop History: Eminem released “The Marshall Mathers LP”

Eminem, born as Marshall Mathers III, released his third studio album The Marshall Mathers LP on May 23, 2000. Best known for his controversial bars and lyrics, Eminem made the news with his explicit song titled “Kim” which was written after he and his ex-wife separated. The LP also features some of his other most memorable songs such as “The Real Slim Shady”, in which he reveals his alter ego “Slim Shady.”

The album was recorded within a two-month span and was produced by artists such as Eminem himself and Dr. Dre. It was awarded the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Album and and in 2001 was given the Grammy Award for Best Album.

Eminem has been named the best rapper of all time by Vibe Magazine and has been listed by Rolling Stone on the “100 Greatest Artists” list.
