Next-up hip-hop artist Relaye left me in awe with the latest music video for his song “Waterslide.” Within seconds of watching, I was immediately drawn to his unique delivery and wordplay. Every bar left me wanting to hear what was next as he rapped about the concept of artist’s choosing whether to sell out or not with their music. As Relaye puts in his own words, “‘Waterslide’ lyrically and visually is centered around the internal battle many artists have between gearing their material towards a mainstream audience in an effort to maximize success, or staying true to themselves creatively regardless of the outcome.” Director Dani Adaliz provided an exceptional pairing visual to go along with the song using the game tug-of-war as symbolism for the “internal battles” Relaye has been faced with. Notable rapper Mick Jenkins pitches in his own verse on the song that provided even more insight into the mind of a modern day artists while delivering the flows and lyricism he’s widely know for. All in all, the visual for “Waterslide” was a compelling video that perfectly embodied the themes covered throughout entire track.
