Making his debut to the Mag, Virgina born artist Matthew Carter and Duke Shocka introduce us to the official music video for “ANXIETY”. This visual + track doesn’t take lightly to Matthew’s upbringing. Born to teenage parents and having no real place to call home was what started his hard journey. His father was sent away to prison and his mother struggled with addiction so as a kid he had to leave his hometown to Louisiana where he spent a lot of time segregated from society. Music started to do it’s healing as Matthew’s mother was always playing Three Six Mafia, Cash Money Millionaires, Project Pat and more. He got bullied where he lived for being one of the only white kids in the neighborhood though he was influenced by the culture. Between the abuse at home and the abuse from school, Matthew was slowly forming his shell.
Later down the road, his mother became unable to take care of him so he was sent back to Virginia with his grandparents and heavily threw himself into more hardcore sounds like Linkin Park, Slipknot, System of A Down, anything you can think of that’ll make you want to cause anarchy as an adolescent. He started skipping classes in high school and got into selling drugs yet he started tapping into spoken thought. It wasn’t until some kids were having a rap battle one day that he just took a chance. Fast forward to being in Florida with his dad, Matthew got a lot of opportunities in music opening for big acts back in the day. Besides a small amateur mixtape, he released “TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN” in 2015 post-addiction and all about his game. Known as Lil Pill at the time, he started catching on to the SoundCloud wave, when Raider Klan, $uicideBoy$, amongst others were ruling people’s ears. Some unthought-out stunts caused him to have an epiphany and thus Matthew Carter is what we get today. A mesh of all types of music and heart-breaking experiences that made him headstrong and a strong competitor in today’s industry. His single “ANXIETY” just hits that spot and you can’t help but get glued to the words. Diamonds are created under pressure and that’s exactly what we see here. Watch now.
