North Florida hip-hop duo JASMINEGOLD, consisting of 19 year-old artists David Nights and KJ, have come through with their debut album Serpent. Here, the duo deliver an expansive alternative hip-hop offering that contains eclectic production and sharply-crafted, diverse rap vocals. Across its 13-track run time, Serpent separates itself from the crowd with a mixture of old-school production, booming bass, glitchy synths and lush atmospheres.
It becomes apparent early in the track-listing that JASMINEGOLD are a duo that refuse to be placed in a box. Off-the-wall, abstract soundscapes dominate much of the album, dynamically ebbing and flowing from cathartic, high-energy tracks, such as bangers like “Broadcast” and “Contraband”, to the warm, relaxed sound of songs such as “Joyride” and “Backseat Driver.” Never settling in one groove as far as both the production and vocals, Serpent engages the listener at every turn with its psychedelic, vivid sound that mixes glitchy samples with expansive atmospherics. Moreover, the two artists share a natural chemistry throughout, with the project’s dynamic vocals matching smoothly with the colorful energy of the beats.
