When you think of That Feel Records producer GRYFFYTH, you should think of innovation. The man behind some of That Feel’s most impressive tracks is back with the eighth installment of his Mind Gems series. From the first track, you are drawn into GRYFFYTH’s kaleidoscope style of music, flipping samples and mixing them with elements of electronic music. Mind Gems Vol. 8 is only a glimpse at what GRYFFYTH has to offer as an artist.
The way these instrumentals are structured is the first thing that sticks out. GRYFFYTH throws in beat cuts and stutter effects that add to the rich textures of these beats. It is very much a collage style of beat making, pasting different sounds throughout the tape makes it so you never know what is coming next. The attention to every detail possible is what makes Mind Gems Vol. 8 such a fun project to listen to.
Finding one word to describe GRYFFYTH’s music is impossible. He mixes so many different influences and musical elements into his production to create a distinctive atmosphere around his releases. A song like “Kingdom Hearts” off of this latest offering is a perfect example of this. The moody drum pattern combined with the cheerful synths creates an almost cloudy feeling to the composition. GRYFFYTH is a master of adding just enough to a song without creating a crowded feeling.
Mind Gems Vol. 8 is like a game of I-spy, the more you look into these songs the more you’ll get out of the project. GRYFFYTH cultivated a novel sound and added another notch in his belt with this offering.
