Dhalslim is a native artist from Lafayette, Indiana that has been making expemerly music for some time now. Releasing his newest album “ Hot Commodity” it’s such an up beat album, just by listening to the first track “ Press Start” you already start feeling the rhythm within your feet. Dhalslim has always had an eye for music ever since the age of 16 and he captured his true inspiration when he started making art with his friend.
One of my favorite tracks from this album would have to be “Don’t Ever Stop Hopping Fences”. It’s such a genuine and real song, he explains just himself and his love for skateboarding and doing fun things with his friends and also pretty much explains don’t ever give up and continue shooting for your goal.
This track is a mixture of rap and hip hop it has such an captivating beat just so booming and him spitting out real facts. These are just some of my favorites make sure to check out all his songs.
Dhalslim sat down with us to discuss his track “ Don’t Ever Stop Hopping Fences” and get to know a little more about him.
Q. Who are you and where are you from?
A. Well they call me slim. I have always been a gamer, that’s how I came up with the name dhalslim (reference to dhalsim from Street Fighter). I’m also from Lafayette Indiana. It’s a decent sized town an hour north from Indianapolis, about 2-3 hours from Chicago. Part college town, part factory, part rural, part city. It’s a combination of things, just like me.
Q. When did you start making music and what encouraged you to start?
A. I had played around with making music since 16, just casually making stuff with my friends. Making art with close friends is where it started and I always try to remain true to that. My freshman year of college I had a song premiered at the Indiana University radio station, WIUX. That was Fibonacci, it’s on my first project “Based on True Events That Have Not Happened Yet”. That motivated me to take music seriously.
Q. Who are your biggest influencers?
A. My biggest influences have been and will always be my friends. Artists such as Samo Don, Resindog, and RangRang shaped me not only as an artist, but also as a person. There’s a lot more names i could add but those are the people i made the most music with.
Q. What inspired you to write Don’t Ever Stop Hopping Fences?
A. I made the beat for “Don’t Ever Stop Hopping Fences” and it clicked with me right away. The song is a culmination of a lot of things about me as an artist. The title is a reference to me being a skate rat. When my friend Big Zay was out in Cali , he went to a skate event and in the background I saw this banner that said “Don’t Ever Stop Hopping Fences”. It spoke to me and all the times me and my friends got chased out of Purdue campus for skating where we weren’t supposed to.
Q. Can you describe why you wrote Don’t Ever Stop Hopping Fences?
A. My favorite is the opening line “Well I switched my style, still the money don’t pile” its raw and honest truth, I’m versatile with my sound and I’m broke as hell.
Q. What do you consider your music genre is?
A. At its core my sound is rap, but I experiment a lot. That’s why I started producing, so I could take control of my sound and try new things. I’ve sum punk, sum blues, whatever.
Q. How long have you been making music for?
A. At this point I’ve made music for about a decade. It’s always worth it. And I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. I’m not concerned with making it big. Ion trust labels and I’d rather create on my own terms. Like Busta said just watch me get down n do my thang
