Ethan Punal is an artist from Kendall, a town located in Miami, Florida. Punal has been drawing all his life, and as long as he can remember has always wanted to draw his own cartoon/comic book characters. He began to draw these “ugly” digital depictions of pop-culture related characters about two years ago. “My first character was named Captain Ethan and I made him to fight this character my brother had made up when we were kids. I would even draw up whatever Yugioh cards I didn’t have or draw Dragon Ball Z characters on paper if I didn’t have that specific toy.” Punal takes inspiration from pop-culture, movies, music, cartoons, jewelry, nature, friends and family. I really dig his representation of these pop-culture “icons”, sort of like exposing the ugly truth. Punal portrays these famous people and characters in a way that pokes fun at society’s obsession with them; that, in my opinion, is genial. A true artist not only exposes their truth but makes waves by doing so. How the viewer chooses to see their message is up to the viewers perception; the fact that it will make the viewer think for themselves, speaks volumes. We live in a time when ideas are constantly being coerced onto us, and leave us with little room to think for ourselves at times. I can’t wait to see more of this young man’s work.
This month, Ethan Punal has a show in Homestead, Florida on May 13th, and a show in Miami on May 18th. Check out more details for these shows and Ethan’s work via his social media outlets, listed below.
