Alexander Wang Spring 2019 “Immigrant Americana” Runway Show

Although Alexander Wang refrained from joining the all popular Fashion Week, he did debut a new collection titled “Immigrant Americana” earlier this week. This collection included bandana, pieces similar to China Town, biker gear, and a lot of safety pins. His new collection was inspired by his own parents’ immigration story when they migrated to America in 1973.

Wang said, “I was inspired by them coming here and not speaking English, going to the grocery store and not knowing how to buy food, and all the jobs they had to do to build a better life for me. And taking that story and infusing it with pop culture Americana references that I grew up with like American football, motorcycle Harley Davidson culture, and rock ’n’ roll music. And then taking Chinoiserie and my heritage and infusing it into that world. I wanted to find a new way to express inclusivity and create a new narrative of what that might look like.”

The front row included many notable celebrities such as Jourdan Dunn, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, A$AP Ferg, and Pusha T. One special member of the audience included Alexander Wang’s father, who never attended any of his shows before. During Wang’s final bow, he was spotted hugging his father in the audience.

During the last scenes of the fashion show, the controversial and relevant song “This Is America” by Childish Gambino blasted through the speakers. Make sure to see some of his newest designs below.
